There are many different type of plastic kegs on the market for beer packaging this decades, they are light weight, cheap, no need washing/cleaning/sterilization, etc., with high barrier performance to O2 and CO2 for long shelf life, most of them for one-way use and don't need to be returned, no worry of keg lost, etc... which is quite convenient for the breweries.
Most of such kegs are intent to replace the stainless steel beer keg, and actually, more and more plastic kegs are using for beer packaging on the market now, but as most of such plastic kegs are for one-way use, the unit packaging cost (packaging cost per liter beer) is still higher than the one from stainless steel kegs, and the main issue is that, some of such plastic keg is not as safe as the stainless kegs, it limite the using of such plastic kegs for the beer packaging.
As have to lower the cost of such plastic keg as much as possible, so that it's competitive to the stainless steel kegs, most of such plastic keg are not possible to be made too thick, to lower the weight and material using, but still need to provide enough strength, then, modified resin with high tensile strength and high barrier performance is used for most of such plastic kegs.
But some times, some of such modified resin is brittle, especially with moisture during the molding process, such moisture makes the molded plastic keg very brittle, when the beer filled in such keg, especially for the beer with high percentage of CO2, during transportation, or under high temperature, the pressure inside the keg become higher and higher, and then such keg will be burst under such high pressure.
Normally, it's very difficult to 100% guarantee no moisture to make the plastic keg brittle during the molding process, even if one of such brittle plastic keg from one million kegs, it's possible to cause big problem on safety; as most of such plastic keg are with big volume/size, much bigger than the glass bottle for sure, once explosion from such plastic beer keg, it will be like a bullet or even like a bomb, it's very dangerous, we can see some reports that some people was killed from explosion of such plastic keg in recent years.
one solution is to increase the wall thickness of such plastic keg, or double wall of such plastic keg, to increase the strength of the plastic keg, so that it will not burst under high pressure from the filled beer or carbonated drinks, but the cost of the plastic keg will be increased significantly too, and of course, still possible explosion if under extremely high pressure, e.g. too high percentage of CO2 in the filled beer or carbonated drinks.
